A Guten Chodesh!
Warm, summer days… I love them. I wait for this time all year.
There is something about summer that feels simpler in the best possible way.
The longer days, the fresh air, the slower pace, the feeling that we can breathe a little.
Recently, I noticed two scenes that I didn’t really appreciate until I put them together in my head and then made me stop and smile.
The first was a group of boys gathering wood for Lag B’Omer.
The excitement!
The planning!
The anticipation!
They were completely absorbed in the process.
Dragging branches, comparing piles, figuring out what would work best.
No one was rushing them. No one was entertaining them. They were simply enjoying the experience itself. Simple, outside, figuring out a plan.
The second scene was outside a girls’ high school during their lunch break on a gorgeous day. Clusters of girls sitting on the grass eating lunch together.
Some were laying back looking at the clouds, some pulling at blades of grass, some just talking about absolutely nothing… and somehow, about everything.
No elaborate plans. No production. Just being together and enjoying the moment.
I think what struck me was how naturally children and teenagers still know how to enjoy simple pleasures.
They know how to be present.
They know how to sit outside without needing to accomplish something every minute.
As adults, life becomes very full.
There is always something waiting for us.
Emails, errands, responsibilities, schedules, things to organize, people to answer, places to be.
Even during the months we look forward to all year, we can move through beautiful days without really experiencing them.
I think summer reminds us that not every meaningful moment has to be productive.
Sometimes there is value in simply slowing down enough to notice what is around us.
To sit outside a little longer.
To take a walk without turning it into another task to complete.
To spend time with friends without multitasking the entire conversation.
To enjoy fresh air, laughter, a late sunset, cold watermelon, an iced coffee, the sounds of children playing outside, the sound of a lawn mower, (not a snow blower!!) or even just a quiet few minutes at the end of the day.
These moments seem small, but they are often the moments that stay with us.
They give us space to think, to reconnect, and to feel a little more relaxed in the middle of busy lives.
Wishing everyone a beautiful, Shavuos, and summer filled with simple joys, meaningful connections, and time to slow down enough to truly enjoy them.
